How did you initially get started in the fashion industry?

I knew immediately in high school that I wanted to do something with fashion even though I didn’t know exactly what it was in fashion I wanted to do. I went to FIDM, and while attending fashion school, I landed my first job working in a multi-showroom in DTLA as a sales rep assistant/showroom manager. From there, I gained enough experience working in the wholesale industry as a road rep, working closely with designers. After years in the industry, I knew something was missing. There was a void that I couldn’t pinpoint. In 2010, I stumbled upon a few fashion blogs and instantly knew I needed to be on this platform, and that’s when MelRodStyle.com was created. After moving from one job after another, I decided to quit my full-time job and pursue my blog full time in 2016.

How would you best describe your job to someone else?

I don’t know why but telling someone that I’m a blogger sounds a bit strange to me. It doesn’t sound natural to say to be honest. I like to say that I am a digital content creator because essentially, that is what I do.

What is one thing about your job no one would expect?

A lot of people think that it is super easy. That all we do is take photos of our outfits, and it’s as easy as point, shoot and upload, when it’s not. Many don’t realize the amount of work and effort that goes into each outfit, each content that you produce.

What is your main source of inspiration when it comes to staying up to date on the fashion industry?

Traveling and other influencers inspire me daily.

What is your biggest advice for putting together a foolproof outfit?

You don’t need to overspend to look great. Fashion is supposed to be fun at any price point. It’s all about balance and how you make every outfit look expensive. I will spend a little more accessories, like shoes or bags than I would on clothing because I think it makes more sense to spend a little more on items you’ll get more wear out of as opposed to splurging on a dress you’ll only wear a few times.

At the moment, are there certain trends/styles you are loving? Hating?

Berets and pantsuits are one of my favorite trends at the moment. Although the baby bump is having a major moment right now, I think I’m going to steer away from that trend for now. ;)

Where are your favorite places to hang out in LA?

I love the arts district area. I think it’s super cool, and there are so many places to go. It’s not as crazy busy as it is in other areas of LA. Plus, there are so many different walls to shoot at. Every street you turn on and every corner you make, you’ll find a completely different wall, which is always a plus for me as an influencer.

We are huge fans of your Instagram. Do you have any tips or tricks for achieving an aesthetically awesome Instagram page? Any social media tips?

Thank you so much. One of my favorite app I use is VSCO. Most bloggers use this app. I would say to play around with different filters and once you find one you love, stick to that group or setting and use it on all your photos. I actually wrote a full blog post on how I edit my Instagram photos. http://melrodstyle.com/2017/01/how-i-edit-my-instagram-photos/

If you could swap wardrobes with anyone in the world living today, who would it be and why?

Nicole Richie. Not only is she my spirit animal, but she is seriously my girl crush everything. Her style is effortless. I don’t think she gets enough credit for her effortless style.
